Samtimer: /* 3. Qualification tournament (QT) */

This page outlines the criteria that will be used to select the players who will represent the United States at the [[2014 SCRABBLE Champions Tournament]] (SCT), formerly known as the World SCRABBLE Championship (WSC).

A similar version of these criteria may also be used for any other international tournament requiring qualification sanctioned by a player's national SCRABBLE organization.

== Eligibility ==

All players wishing to qualify must be NASPA members in good standing.

United States citizens and permanent residents are eligible.

Players may not register for the qualification process if they have already registered
to qualify for another nation. If a player registers to play for the U.S. and also attempts to represent another nation at SCT 2014 (with or without withdrawing from the U.S. registration), they will be ineligible to compete for the U.S. at the next SCT.

== Assumptions and Caveats ==

It is unknown but assumed for the purposes of the process defined below:

The SCT will be held sometime between September and December of 2014.
If it is held earlier in the year than September, the end of the Qualifying
Period, deadline for process registration, and the dates for the Qualifying
Tournament will be moved earlier accordingly.

The United States will have between 13 and 15 slots for the 2014 SCT.
If the WESPA process of awarding slots changes and the US has fewer than 13 or
greater than 15 slots available, then the number of slots available at the
Qualifying Tournament will be adjusted accordingly.

== Registering for the qualification process ==

Players who intend to claim a spot on the team as one of the top 10 finishers at
the 2013 SCT or who intend to qualify on the basis of peak rating must register and
commit to play by the end of the Qualification Period (see below). Any player who
qualifies by peak rating or top ten finish, registers for the process, and withdraws
after the end of the Qualification Period will be ineligible to play on the U.S. team at
the the next SCT. Players wishing to register should contact [[Sam Kantimathi]] and
[[John Chew]].

The deadline for registering for the qualification tournament will be announced
after the date for the tournament is set. All players in the qualifying tournament must
agree to attend the SCT if they qualify. Any player who qualifies via the qualifying
tournament and withdraws after the completion of the qualifying tournament will be
ineligible to play on the U.S. team at the next SCT.

== Qualified players ==

The following players have qualified to represent the USA at the 2014 SCT:

# Qualified via top ten overall finish at 2013 SCT:
# Qualified via peak rating:
# Qualified via Qualification tournament:

== Registered player list ==

The following players have registered for the qualification process:

== Qualification period (QP) ==

The qualification period begins with the 2013 National Scrabble Championship
and ends Memorial Day Weekend 2014 (although see Assumptions and Caveats
above). A qualification tournament (QT) will be held in June or July of 2014 (again,
see Assumptions and Caveats).

Note: Tournaments that are in progress at the beginning or end of the QP were
considered to fall within the QP.

== Available spots ==

It is assumed that the United States will be represented by between thirteen and fifteen players in 2014. (see Assumptions and Caveats above)

== Criteria (in order) ==

=== 1. [[World English-language Scrabble Players' Association]]  (WESPA)  bye(s) ===

Any spots awarded by WESPA (for example, for being a finalist at the previous SCT, or for being champion of the WYSC) do not count against the United States' allotment.

=== 2. Top ten overall finishers from the [[2013 SCRABBLE Champions Tournament]] ===

Any American finishing in the overall top ten in the 2013 SCT will be invited to
represent the US in the 2014 SCT, provided they maintain NASPA membership and
play the minimum number of tournament games in QP. If any of these players
decline to play, then additional spots will be determined by peak rating.

=== 3. Qualification tournament (QT) ===

Four spots will be determined by a 20-game qualification tournament that will be
held in June or July of 2014. Details about the tournament will be announced later. Most likely, it will be held on the West Coast, probably in San Francisco.
To be eligible for the QT, players must meet the eligibility requirements for
representing the US at the 2014 SCT as enumerated above. The participation
requirement does not apply to players who wish to qualify via the QT. Players who
sign up for the QT will be automatically registered for the qualifying process, and
must commit to play the SCT if they earn a spot.

=== 4. Peak NASPA SOWPODS rating (PR) ===

The remainder of slots (depending on the number of Americans in the top ten,
and the overall team allocation) will be determined by peak rating during the QP.
A player must have played at least 31 fully rated (CSW) NASPA games before their
post-tournament rating will count as a peak rating. The final rating from any fully rated tournament once this participation requirement is met may be used as a PR.

Any bonus points will count as a part of a person’s PR.

Ratings following tournaments which are not fully rated (ie, LCTs) will not count
as a peak rating, but any such games played will count as 1/3 of a game towards fulfilling the participation requirement.

==== PR tie-breakers ====

# Head-to-head records among tied players in fully rated games during the QP.
# Second highest rating achieved after playing at least 31 games in the QP.
# Highest rating achieved after any fully rated tournament in the QP.
# Number of CSW games played in the QP.
# Drawing of lots.

== Qualification Standings ==

== Alternates ==

Any spots opened by withdrawl of a player after the applicable deadline (end
of the Qualifying Period, or completion of the Qualifying Tournament) will be
filled by PR.
== Qualification period (QP) ==

The qualification period begins on September 22, 2011 and ended on May 1, 2013. A qualification tournament (QT) was held from June 14-16 in Princeton, NJ.

Note: Tournaments that are in progress at the beginning or end of the QP were considered to fall within the QP.

== Available spots ==

The United States will be represented by fourteen players in 2013.

== Criteria (in order) ==

=== 1. [[World English-language Scrabble Players' Association]]  (WESPA)  bye(s) ===

Any spots awarded by WESPA (for example, for being a finalist at the previous WSC, or for being champion of the WYSC) do not count against the United States' allotment.

=== 2. Top ten overall finishers from the [[2011 World SCRABBLE Championship]] ===

Any American finishing in the overall top ten in WSC2011 will be invited to represent the US in WSC2013, provided they maintain NASPA membership and play the minimum number of tournament games in QP. If any of these players decline to play, then additional spots will be determined by peak rating.

=== 3. Qualification tournament (QT) ===

Three spots (and one alternate) will be determined by a 20-game qualification tournament that will be held in Princeton, NJ on June 14-16. Details about the tournament will be announced later. To be eligible for the QT, players must have played 20 games fully-rated by NASPA (TWL or SOWPODS) during the QP. Players who sign up for the QT will be automatically registered for the qualifying process, and must commit to play the WSC if they earn a spot.

==== QT tie-breakers (if tied on wins and spread) ====

If two or more players are tied then that tie will be broken based on PR and PR tie breaker procedures will be in effect.

=== 4. Peak NASPA TWL or NASPA SOWPODS rating + 50 points (PR) ===

The remainder of slots (depending on the number of Americans in the top ten, and the overall team allocation) will be determined by peak rating during the QP.

A player’s PR is the highest tournament rating that is achieved after the player has fulfilled the participation requirements (see below).

A player may use either their NASPA TWL rating or their NASPA SOWPODS rating as a peak rating. In order to give greater weight to ratings that are achieved in the lexicon of the World Championship, 50 points will be added to a player's peak rating in the NASPA SOWPODS system. For example, a peak rating of 1900 in the NASPA SOWPODS system will be considered equivalent to a peak rating of 1950 in the NASPA TWL system.

In order for a player's NASPA TWL rating to count as a valid peak rating, the player must have played 65 total games in the NASPA TWL and NASPA SOWPODS rating systems. Additionally, the player must have played 30 games in the NASPA TWL rating system, including two tournaments of at least 5 games each.

In order for a player's NASPA SOWPODS rating to count as a valid peak rating, the player must have played 65 total games in the NASPA TWL and NASPA SOWPODS rating systems. Additionally, the player must have played 30 games in the NASPA SOWPODS rating system, including two tournaments of at least 5 games each.

Players with peak ratings in both rating systems will use the higher of the two peaks as their PR.

Only ratings achieved at the conclusion of fully rated tournaments will be considered a PR.

'''(Update: 11-30-12: A NASPA member has pointed out an inconsistency in the handling of bonus points in tournaments of different lengths. To fix this inconsistency, bonus points will no longer be subtracted from players' peak ratings, regardless of the length of the tournament at which the peak rating was earned.)'''

==== PR tie-breakers ====

# Highest NASPA SOWPODS peak rating.
# Highest number of NASPA SOWPODS games played.
# Second highest rating achieved after playing at least 50 games in the QP.
# Highest rating achieved after any fully rated tournament in the QP.
# Drawing of lots.

[http://scrabbleplayers.org/tourneys/2013/wsc/usaqual.shtml Qualification standings] were updated regularly, and are now final.

== Alternates ==

# Players who accept an allotted spot and withdraw before the QT will be replaced based on PR.
# One alternate spot for the U.S. team will be awarded based on the standings of the QT.
# Any further alternate spots will be awarded based on PR.

== Qualification period (QP) ==

The qualification period begins on September 22, 2011 and will end on May 1, 2013. A qualification tournament (QT) will be held from June 14-16 in Princeton, NJ.

Note: Tournaments that are in progress at the beginning or end of the QP were considered to fall within the QP.

== Available spots ==

The United States will be represented by fourteen players in 2013.

== Criteria (in order) ==

=== 1. [[World English-language Scrabble Players' Association]]  (WESPA)  bye(s) ===

=== 3. Qualification tournament (QT) ===

==== PR tie-breakers ====

# Highest NASPA SOWPODS peak rating.
# Highest number of NASPA SOWPODS games played.
# Second highest rating achieved after playing at least 50 games in the QP.
# Highest rating achieved after any fully rated tournament in the QP.

==== PR tie-breakers ====

# Highest number of NASPA SOWPODS games played.
== Qualification period (QP) ==

The qualification period begins on September 22, 2011 and will end on May 1, 2013. A qualification tournament (QT) will be held from June 14-16 in Princeton, NJ.

Note: Tournaments that are in progress at the beginning or end of the QP will be considered to fall within the QP.

== Available spots ==

The United States will be represented by fourteen players in 2013.

== Criteria (in order) ==

=== 1. [[World English-language Scrabble Players' Association]]  (WESPA)  bye(s) ===

=== 3. Qualification tournament (QT) ===

==== PR tie-breakers ====

# Highest number of NASPA SOWPODS games played.
# Second highest rating achieved after playing at least 50 games in the QP.
== Qualification period (QP) ==

The qualification period begins on September 22, 2011 and will end on May 1, 2013. A qualification tournament (QT) will be held from June 14-16 in Princeton, NJ.

Note: Tournaments that are in progress at the beginning or end of the QP will be considered to fall within the QP.

== Available spots ==

The United States will be represented by fourteen players in 2013.

== Criteria (in order) ==

=== 1. [[World English-language Scrabble Players' Association]]  (WESPA)  bye(s) ===

=== 3. Qualification tournament (QT) ===

==== PR tie-breakers ====

# Highest NASPA SOWPODS peak rating.
# Highest number of NASPA SOWPODS games played.
# Second highest rating achieved after playing at least 50 games in the QP.
# Highest rating achieved after any fully rated tournament in the QP.
# Drawing of lots.

== 2013 Can-Am SCRABBLE Challenge qualification system ==

A total of 14 entrants will qualify to compete at the 2013 Can-Am SCRABBLE Challenge, seven each representing the United States and Canada.

The event will be hosted by Vancouver, BC NASPA club#545, and will take place at Vancouver, BC, Canada on Saturday and Sunday September 21 and 22, 2013.

We intend the end of the qualifying period to also be the deadline for registering.

== Eligibility ==

All Canadian team members must be citizens or permanent residents of Canada.
All U.S. team members must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents in the U.S.
All participants must be NASPA members in good standing as of September 21, 2013.

== Qualification Period ==

As in past years, the qualification period is from the beginning of October 2012 (the month in which the previous Challenge was contested) to about three months before this years Can-Am, with dates adjusted slightly to include events played on the first and last weekends during that period: 2012-10-01 to 2013-06-24 (inclusive).

== Participation Requirement ==

Players who wish to qualify must meet a minimum participation requirement of 24 NASPA rated tournament games played during the qualification period. These can be either TWL, CSW or a combination of both.

== Peak Rating ==

Players will qualify based on the higher of their peak NASPA rating (PR) in either TWL or Collins. A player’s PR is defined as his or her highest rating that satisfies the following conditions:
It is achieved at the end of a rated tournament played.
It is not achieved before the tournament in which the participation requirement has been met.

If two or more players have the same PR, then the tie will be broken by each player's second highest PR eligible rating. If still tied then the tie will be broken by total number of games played during the QP. If still tied then the tie will be broken by rating achieved after any fully rated tournament in the QP. Drawing of lots will be necessary if there is still a tie.

== Lexicon ==

The following procedure will be used for the 2013 Can-Am (as in Can-Am 2012):
When registering, players will indicate their preferred lexicon.
They will not be able to change this after the end of the qualification period, which falls on 2013-06-24.
During the tournament, if both players have registered as preferring CSW, their game will be played to the CSW lexicon, with 10 point per word penalty challenges. All other games will be played to the TWL lexicon with double challenge.
Players will have until 2013-07-01, which is one week after the end of the qualification period '''to withdraw without penalty''' if they are not comfortable with the number of their opponents who have opted for their non-preferred lexicon, (by emailing sam@samtimer.com for USA Players or Tony.Leah@caw.ca for Canadian players).

== Current Standings ==

To see where players currently stand in qualifying to represent their countries, please see the [http://www.scrabbleplayers.org/tourneys/2013/canam/qual.shtml full qualification standings]. Players marked ‘n’ have confirmed that they will not play; those who have confirmed their intent to play are marked with their preferred lexicon. Please report any corrections to John Chew.

== Alternates ==

All alternates will be chosen on the basis of PR.

== Disputes ==

''Dispute  Resolution

''

In the event that a dispute concerning these rules should arise, it will be
 resolved by one of the following bodies as indicated: Canadian Committee
(matters concerning qualification of Canadian players), TeamUSA Selection Committee (matters concerning qualification of US players), International
 Committee (all other matters arising before the first day of the tournament),
the Tournament Director (any matters arising on the days on which the
tournament is contested). As always, rulings concerning disputes may
be appealed to the Advisory Board, which will (time permitting) hear
them at its next scheduled monthly meeting.

== 2013 Can-Am SCRABBLE Challenge qualification system ==

== Eligibility ==

All Canadian team members must be citizens or permanent residents of Canada.
All U.S. team members must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents in the U.S.
All participants must be NASPA members in good standing as of September 21, 2013.

== Qualification Period ==

== Participation Requirement ==

Players who wish to qualify must meet a minimum participation requirement of 24 NASPA rated tournament games played during the qualification period. These can be either TWL, CSW or a combination of both.

== Peak Rating ==

== Lexicon ==

== Current Standings ==

== Alternates ==

All alternates will be chosen on the basis of PR.

== Disputes ==

== Lexicon ==

Previous participants in the Can-Am SCRABBLE Challenge were surveyed about their preferred lexicon for the 2012 Challenge. There were 23 surveys returned with the following responses:

Not able to play this year 2
Will play either, prefer CSW 10

Will play either, prefer TWL 2

Based on these results the following procedure will be used for the 2012 Can-Am:
When registering, players will indicate their preferred lexicon.
They will not be able to change this after the end of the qualification period.
During the tournament, if both players have registered as preferring CSW, their game will be played to the CSW lexicon, with 10 point per word penalty challenges. All other games will be played to the TWL lexicon with double challenge.
Players will have until 2012-7-30, which is one week after the end of the qualification period '''to withdraw without penalty''' if they are not comfortable with the number of their opponents who have opted for their non-preferred lexicon.

== Current Standings ==

To see where players currently stand in qualifying to represent their countries, please see the full qualification standings. Players marked ‘y’ have confirmed their intent to play; those marked ‘n’ have confirmed that they will not play. Players preferred lexicon will also be indicated. Please report any corrections to John Chew.

== Alternates ==

All alternates will be chosen on the basis of PR.

== Disputes ==

''Dispute  Resolution

''

== 2012 Can-Am SCRABBLE Challenge qualification system ==

A total of 14 entrants will qualify to compete at the 2012 Can-Am SCRABBLE Challenge, seven each representing the United States and Canada.

The event will be hosted by the Millburn, NJ NASPA club #411, and will take place at Millburn, NJ, USA on Saturday and Sunday October 27 and 28, 2012.

== Eligibility ==

All Canadian team members must be citizens or permanent residents of Canada.
All U.S. team members must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents in the U.S.
All participants must be NASPA members in good standing as of October 27, 2012.

== Qualification Period ==

As in past years, the qualification period is from the beginning of March 2011 (the month in which the previous Challenge was contested) to about three months before this years Can-Am, with dates adjusted slightly to include events played on the first and last weekends during that period: 2011-03-01 to 2012-07-23 (inclusive).

== Participation Requirement ==

Players who wish to qualify must meet a minimum participation requirement of 24 NASPA rated tournament games played during the qualification period. These can be either TWL, CSW or a combination of both.

== Peak Rating ==

Players will qualify based on the higher of their peak NASPA rating (PR) in either TWL or Collins. A player’s PR is defined as his or her highest un-accelerated rating that satisfies the following conditions:
It is achieved at the end of a rated tournament played.
It is not achieved before the tournament in which the participation requirement has been met.

“Un-accelerated” means that acceleration points earned in a tournament are deducted
from the player’s post-tournament rating before it is considered for a peak rating.

== Lexicon ==
